Northwest Clean Air Agency

Air is essential to life, yet most of us don't think much about the purity of the air we breathe, at least not until there is something wrong with it.

The Northwest Clean Air Agency is responsible for ensuring compliance with federal, state and local air quality regulations in Island, Skagit and Whatcom counties.  The agency also sponsors voluntary programs to further improve air quality.  It is our job to see that people in our region have clean air to breathe.

The Northwest Clean Air Agency (NWCAA) is one of seven regional air quality control agencies located throughout Washington State. It was established in 1967 after passage of the Washington State Clean Air Act (RCW 70.94). The agency is responsible for enforcing federal, state and local air pollution regulations in Island, Skagit and Whatcom counties. When we began our work in 1967, businesses and industries were the primary focus for air pollution control. Over the years, new equipment and improved operations have dramatically reduced air pollution from the commercial sector.

Today, most of the air pollution comes from our everyday activities and choices – like driving, burning outdoors and heating with wood. This is why we sponsor voluntary initiatives to improve air quality and educate people and businesses about clean-air choices.
